Considering the Brain in Clinical Practice

Neurocounseling is a new approach to the counseling process that integrates knowledge of the brain and related physiology into clinical practice. Integrating brain function into mental health treatment offers clients a more holistic treatment approach. A neurocounselor uses the understanding of the interplay between the brain, its structures and its functions to gain a richer understanding of the client and his or her presenting concerns. A neurocounselor is able to incorporate all of this into the therapy sessions which helps clients view themselves through a different lens. It helps clients understand that they are more than their thoughts, behaviors, and symptoms. Clients tend to like this approach as it helps to destigmatize mental health and offers relief in knowing that physiology plays a role in the behaviors and emotions.

Neurocounseling has the potential to enhance treatment strategies beyond traditional counseling approaches. Understanding the connectedness of the brain and related physiology benefits both the counselor and the client and in turn the work that they are able to accomplish together. This understanding of the brain and its function allows counselors to embrace even more benefits of the therapeutic relationship.
